When I was 16, I saw a small ad in the paper placed by a hiking club. The club was organizing a trek in the Western Ghats. I went along for the trek, and that was my first experience of hiking. I have trekked across the Himalayas, while outside of India I have hiked in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia, and also in the North Cascades National Park (in the state of Washington, USA). It’s difficult to pick out a special memory since I have been trekking now for more than 25 years, but if I had to pick one, it would be when I co-led the Indo-Austrian expedition in the first ascent of the Mamostong Kangri II, in the Great Karakoram range, in 1993. I have also, since 1996, been teaching Glacier Mountaineering and Backpacking, at the National Outdoor Leadership School in the US .
